SLC to Celebrate 1894-style
for History’s Sake

Mayor Ralph Becker and the Utah Heritage Foundation are hosting “Celebrate the City: 1894” an event to celebrate historic buildings in Salt Lake City and mark the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the Salt Lake City & County Building. Celebrate the City: 1894 will take place on May 2, 2009 from 3:00 – 7:00 pm, at Salt Lake City’s historic Washington Square and will be open to the public.

The City & County Building grounds will be transformed into an atmosphere of a late-19th century carnival. Children and adults will experience barbershop quartets, brass bands, tethered hot air balloon rides, games and activities, old-time bicycles, ice cream, popcorn, and root beer. Celebrate the City will offer participants a look into the era the City & County Building was completed in 1894. Celebrate the City: 1894 will feature guided tours of the building and its iconic clock tower.

Holly and Chap were people after my own heart.  They were urban farmers and they brought a little bit of the farm life to our neighborhood and the city.  With chickens, goats and bees along with a wonderful vegetable garden they had it all.  Me, I only have a vegetable garden a compost heap and composting worms.  I am afraid that I don’t have room for the goats, but upon leaving Holly and Chap gifted me the goat house that will soon be my chicken coop.  Yes, the chickens are returning to the neighborhood.

What Holly and Chap did for me was return me to the not so urban farm that I had as a child.  The one where the geese and ducks play with the goats and chickens ran with the quail and we rode the horses around the cows.  It was a wonderful life that I missed and thanks to Holly and Chap I had a chance to relive and will now even relive personally.

Now a new product has come online called the EcoDrain. I have to say that I like the looks of the EcoDrain better. Also, from what I see, it appears that the EcoDrain heats the cold water going directly to your shower and it does not first send it to your water heater. By doing this they see a potential energy savings of 40%. A little more savings and a tidier mechanical makeup makes this a very cool product in my book.

While enjoying the eclectic mix of shops and restaurants at the corner of 900 E. and 900 S. you are sure to notice a beautiful array of kinetic art. Call “The Nine Muses” it was installed in 2007. These works were the work of Seattle Artist, Troy Pillow. They are wonderful and constantly in motion.

If you are looking for something a little more modern, you will find that as well. Recent trends are bringing “urban infill” homes to lots where the original home was no longer salvageable.
