for History’s Sake

Mayor Ralph Becker and the Utah Heritage Foundation are hosting “Celebrate the City: 1894” an event to celebrate historic buildings in Salt Lake City and mark the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the Salt Lake City & County Building. Celebrate the City: 1894 will take place on May 2, 2009 from 3:00 – 7:00 pm, at Salt Lake City’s historic Washington Square and will be open to the public.

The City & County Building grounds will be transformed into an atmosphere of a late-19th century carnival. Children and adults will experience barbershop quartets, brass bands, tethered hot air balloon rides, games and activities, old-time bicycles, ice cream, popcorn, and root beer. Celebrate the City will offer participants a look into the era the City & County Building was completed in 1894. Celebrate the City: 1894 will feature guided tours of the building and its iconic clock tower.

When you visit this site you will find information on events and activities in the neighborhood and as this site grows I will offer neighborhood business information, a calendar of events, real estate activity and homes for sale, along with all the other information available throughout my site. According to their website the store will feature Thom’s (the owners) choice of merchandise and services that will reflect the values of his environmentally conscious consumers: locally produced, socially responsibility, environmentally sustainable, and all conveniently located in a one-stop-shop for home and business customers. Plus they recycled an existing building! The have made great use of what looks like an old Circle K that had been converted into a local mini mart many years ago. No tear down and rebuild here. Just a great use for an existing building.

My wife and I stopped in briefly and walked through the store a few weekends back and before they were actually selling product and we were very excited to see what was coming. This is an awesome store that is within walking distance of one the most walkable communities in the valley.
